This year, Jake got a new heart. And this holiday season, his whole family has reason to celebrate. Donate now and keep more families whole.
22-month-old Jake Schron had end-stage dilated cardiomyopathy, which meant that his heart was too big, and pumping too little. Fortunately, thanks to better diagnosis and treatment because of supporters like you, there was hope.
A trip to the emergency room led doctors to determine that Jake needed a new heart. For months, Jake's mom Shannon lived in his hospital room. And the entire time, she and Jake's dad Andrew were counting the days until the one that really mattered: Day 112, when Jake got his new heart.
Speaking a few days after the transplant, Shannon was still amazed. "I kind of feel like I'm a little bit on a cloud," she said. "It hasn't set in that he has a new heart."
This holiday season, please donate to make success stories like this possible. Now, a normal toddler is part of the Schron family's celebration this year. Shannon even joked that "he was acting a lot more like himself because he is back to saying 'NO!' to his nurses."
My son is such a fighter," Shannon said. "Seeing him going through this and handling it, it kind of gives you the strength to go forward. No matter what is happening that boy has a smile on his face."
Despite their joy, Jake's parents knew that their happiness did not come without a price. "To our Donor family, thank you for your selfless act and giving our family the greatest gift possible," they wrote on Facebook. "Your child will live on through our son and he/she will always be a hero in our eyes."
Stories like Jake's are why we celebrate. And why we thank you for your support.
This holiday, your donation can help doctors diagnose and treat many heart diseases soon after birth. Which gives kids like Jake a better chance of surviving. So this holiday season, let's celebrate giving the littlest ones the biggest chance of success we can. Because after all, "Life is Why."
