2017 is FULL of Potential!
Black History Month 2017: History In the Making
2016 was a tough year for health justice and equity. In 2017, we are recharged and committed to shining a spotlight on issues that affect communities of color across the nation. We pledge to not only host discussions, but also pledge to work with you to create sustainable solutions that will directly impact and project our communities ahead, helping to close the disparity gap. This year we will explore the SOCIAL DETERMINANTS OF HEALTH, external factors that can lead to the key issues that you are used to discussing with us-heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure and stress.
Help us highlight History in the Making.
Send us pictures and stories that highlight the positive efforts that are being implemented to positively impact the health outcomes your community for a feature on our social media and webpage. Share your submissions with us on Facebook and/or email it to us at empoweredtoserve@heart.org.

My Gluten free morning Oatmeal with added fresh fruit apple slices (Gala) and a 1/4 tsp. of Mixed Dark Berries/ Pineapple smoothie - fruit & veggie spinach- carrot  blend poured in and drinking bottled water with fresh peeled chopped ginger added and Chia Seeds.  Gives amazing energy and cuts post nasal winter nausea (also due to meds).

http://www.heart.org/theresaecksteinStarted before the holidays , which is normally the toughest time of all and after 6 mos. I am on a routine that feels great. I workout to Leslie Sansone's American Heart Association 's 3 mile walk and rotate with free weights, exercise ball and treadmill and zumba daily. I've lost 70 lbs in 6 mos. My Heart Disease and Diabetes is better controlled. A grandmother at 51, I plan to be around much longer. If I can do it , you can too. "Poetry is a conversation with the world, poetry is a conversation with the words on the page in which you allow those words to speak back to you, and poetry is a conversation with yourself." - Naomi Shihab Nye, poet

Poetry uses words to process emotions, and stroke appears to bring up plenty of emotions. We present five stroke survivors who share a bit of their stories as well as their poems.

Poetry therapist Sherry Reiter shares how poetry can be helpful in recovery and offers an invitation (and guidance) to liberate your own muse.

When Stroke Affects the Brain Stem
The brain stem serves as a bridge in the nervous system. It sits at the top of the spinal column in the center of the brain. When a stroke happens there, it can cause a few different deficits and, in the most severe cases, can lead to locked-in syndrome.Digital Edition | Web
